Greg reluctantly started running competitively in 1999 when he joined the freshman Cross Country team at Colonie High School (NY) thanks to the coaxing of a persistent coach. He went on to run Division III Cross Country and Track in college at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he met his future wife, Molly, on the team. He served as Captain his senior year, and focused on middle distance events running 52 seconds in the 400, 1:56 in the 800, and 4:01 in the 1500. In 2007, he placed 3rd in the Division III Indoor NY State meet in the 1000 meters. After college and graduate school, Greg moved to the DC area in 2009 to start his career as an epidemiologist. He finally got serious about running again around 2012-2014, and joined Capital Area Runners in 2014 to begin training with Coach George Buckheit. Over his 10+ years of post-collegiate training, with the bulk of those training miles taking place while run-commuting, he set personal bests at longer race distances from the 5k to the marathon, and ran consistent near-PR performances. This included ten sub-2:30 marathons from 2013-2019, and several race wins, including his largest at the 2018 Shamrock Half Marathon.
