Susanna Sullivan

Susanna was a standout performer at George Mason High School (VA) garnering All-Region, All-District and All-State honors in both cross country and track and winning Virginia State Championships in the 1600m and 3200m. During her collegiate years at Notre Dame, Susanna was hampered by multiple injuries but still managed to record personal bests on the track of 16:56 for 5k and 36:13 for 10k. She graduated cum laude from Notre Dame in 2012 with degrees in political science and psychology. Susanna’s post-collegiate running career as a member of northern Virginia’s Capital Area Runners has been marked by steady improvement and a rise to national prominence. She showed that she had a particular talent for longer distance races with her 4th place finish at the 2013 Shamrock Half Marathon in 1:16:31. Later that same year she would finish as the top American and 11th place overall in the Philadelphia Rock n Roll Half Marathon in 1:16:18. During a span of 5 weeks in early 2014, Susanna had a string of 4 breakout performances beginning with her victory in DC’s St. Patrick’s Day 8k in a course record 26:51, followed by an Olympic Trials Qualifying performance of 1:14:22 in finishing 2nd at the Shamrock Half Marathon, then a 2nd place 33:42 at the Monument Avenue 10k and culminating with a 54:31 at the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile which placed her 4th in the USA Championship division and 8th overall. Susanna’s 2015 performances included a PR 1:13:13 at the USA Half Marathon Championship in Houston, a PR 33:13.33 for 10k on the track at the Payton Jordan Invitational and a 7th place finish in 2:35:37 at Grandma’s Marathon in her debut at that distance. In 2016, she finished 20th in the U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon in Los Angeles, California. RunWashington Magazine named Susanna the Female Runner of the Year for the DC Metro region in 2014,2015, and 2016. In February 2020, Susanna competed in her second U.S Olympic Trials Marathon, and ran PRs at 10 Miles (54:22) and the marathon (2:33:27) in the two limited-field, pandemic-protocol race opportunities in which she competed. In 2021, Susanna has set PRs at a range of distances: 5k (road), 10k (track and road), ½ marathon and marathon. When Susanna isn’t running, she works as a 5th grade teacher in Falls Church, VA.
